00332 - SAS Operator Paddy Mayne Unframed Artwork, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert "Paddy" Mayne was a legendary figure in British Special Forces history, known for his leadership in the Special Air Service (SAS) during World War II. Originally a rugby star and lawyer, Mayne's daring and complex personality led him from the Royal Ulster Rifles to the SAS, where he led high-stakes missions in North Africa and Europe, often single-handedly destroying enemy aircraft. His extraordinary courage and tactical expertise earned him multiple Distinguished Service Orders. Mayne died in 1955, but his legacy endures as a symbol of fearless wartime heroism. During the course of the Second World War, Mayne became one of the British Army's most highly decorated soldiers. He was controversially denied a Victoria Cross.
